Jewel Boxes

These four jewelry boxes were created in the past three months specifically for my partnership with magpie. Each box was sourced by me, found at a vintage market or antique store. The boxes were then sanded down and repainted with a base color. Then each box was carefully hand painted, inspired by the traditional style of rosemaling. This means painting each box with motifs of nature in a decorative manner. This art form originated in Norway in the mid 1700’s. My take on the art form, like many of the artists practicing in Norway at this time, is unique and without boundaries. My style of rosemaling has a more modern sensibility, less ornamental than the traditional practice.
